Good morning Nigeria, welcome to Naija News roundup of top newspapers headlines in Nigeria for today, Monday, 24th January 2022

The publisher of Ovation Magazine, Dele Momodu, has denied asking Nigerians to vote for President Muhammadu Buhari in 2015.

Naija News reports that the media mogul who recently joined the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has declared his intention to contest in the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking with Chude Jideonwo, Momodu said he personally likes President Buhari but not his way of playing politics.

“I didn’t sell Buhari to you. All I did was post his pictures. There is no way anyone can say, I said you must go and vote for Buhari,” he said.

Former Nigerian military head of state, Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd) has opened up on why he has refused to venture into politics after retiring from the Army.

According to Abdulsalami who described himself as a very reserved person, he doesn’t possess the characteristics and qualities needed to be a good politician.

He spoke during an interview with Trust TV which was published on Sunday.

Naija News recalls Abdulsalami took over as President of Nigeria in June 1998 after the death of Gen. Sani Abacha and handed over to a democratically elected president in the person of Chief Olusegun Obasanjo on May 29, 1999.

While it is not uncommon for retired military officers to join politics, Abubakar explained that he didn’t participate in politics because he doesn’t possess the needed characteristics and doesn’t want any disturbance or trouble.

Former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshimhole has denied mocking Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State.

A Twitter account (@A_Oshiomhole) impersonating the former Edo state Governor had described Makinde as ‘an overhyped social media governor’.

But in a statement on Sunday issued by his spokesman, Victor Oshioke, Oshiomhole denied making such a statement against the Oyo state governor, dissociating himself from the Twitter handle.

He informed the general public that the Twitter account is fake as it is not operated by him or any of his aides, urging Nigerians to disregard any statement from the account.

The former APC Chairman said he holds Governor Makinde in high esteem and has no reason whatsoever to privately or publicly denigrate him.

A train in motion on Sunday crushed a Dangote cement truck and a commercial tricycle, popularly called Keke Napep’, in Kano State.

Naija News reports that an unspecified number of passengers were feared dead after the unfortunate incident.

It was gathered that the incident occurred on Obasanjo Road in Kano metropolis at about 11:30 am.

An eyewitness, who is a trader beside the rail track, told The PUNCH that he noticed the truck moving towards the rail line, as the train was in motion.

According to the witnesses, efforts made to flag down the trailer were not fruitful.

Former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has revealed how the late MKO Abiola fell ill and died during a meeting with an American delegation in 1998.

The former Nigerian leader said that Abiola was not killed rather fell ill as against the popular story of the deceased being poisoned with tea.

Abubakar revealed this in an interview with Trust TV which was published on Sunday.

He stated that his Chief Security Officer who was with the American delegation when Abiola died called to inform him that the politician had given up the ghost.

The Lagos State Government has announced an end to the fourth wave of COVID-19 in the South-West state.

Naija News reports that the state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, made the announcement in a post via his verified Twitter account on Saturday.

Abayomi said that a consistent decrease in COVID-19 case positivity was an indication of the end of the fourth wave in the state.

He said there was a reduction in positivity rates of COVID-19 infection from 29.3 percent recorded on December 21, 2021, to 1.9 percent on January 20, 2022.

The commissioner said that bed capacity utilization in the state is at only two percent and the fatality rate at 0.71 percent.

He, however, appealed to Lagosians to get vaccinated and continue to adhere to non-pharmaceutical interventions to further reduce the spread of the virus.

Popular businessman, Chief Raymond Dokpesi, has declared that only one person has the coverage, support, and resources to challenge the presidential ambition of Asiwaju Bola Tinubu.

According to Dokpesi, only former Vice President Atiku Abubakar can challenge and defeat Tinubu at the polls.

Naija News reports Dokpesi said this when he led a delegation of the Atiku Abubakar Campaign Caretaker Committee to Anambra State where they met with the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2021 Anambra guber, Valentine Ozigbo.

It was gathered that Ozigbo received the delegation at his Amesi home in Aguata Local government area of the state on Saturday.

Speaking during the visit, Dokpesi revealed that the delegation was in Anambra to inform the people about the interest of Atiku Abubakar in contesting the 2023 presidency and to seek their support.

A former Head of State, Abdulsalami Abubakar, has revealed how Nigeria’s late dictator, Gen Sani Abacha, died in 1998.

In an interview with Daily Trust TV, Abdulsalami noted that the former dictator died during the night he was to travel to Togo for an African Union (AU) Summit.

The former Chief of Defence Staff said the news of Abacha’s death was relayed to him by a former Inspector-General of Police, Ibrahim Coomassie.

Abubakar, however, revealed that the council members decided that he should take over as the head of state.

Chairman, National Peace Committee, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (rtd), has denied his involvement in the emergence of Olusegun Obasanjo as president in 1999.

Naija News recalls that in 2017, former President Obasanjo had claimed that Abubakar was part of those that made him president in 1999.

Speaking then at the Niger State Investment and Economic Summit in Minna, Obasanjo added that he was imprisoned by late General Sani Abacha for an offence he did not commit.

But in a sit down with Daily Trust, Abubakar said he was not part of the leading generals that brought Obasanjo out of prison to become the president.

He said the government released and pardoned Obasanjo following Abacha’s death. He said the former president was imprisoned over the allegation of a military coup by the late dictator.

The former military Head of State added that Obasanjo only came to see him for advice, adding that the arrangement to make him president must have happened within the political parties.

The Super Eagles of Nigeria have been knocked out of the ongoing African Cup of Nations (AFCON) holding in Cameroon.

A second-half goal from Msakni was enough to send the three-time African champions out of the tournament on Sunday.

Nigeria’s 0-1 loss to the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia is coming hours after President Muhammadu Buhari had a video call with the team alongside the Minister of Sports, Sunday Dare and President of the Nigerian Football Federation, Amaju Pinnick.

Buhari had during the call urged the Super Eagles to bring the AFCON trophy back to the country.

But the Super Eagles could not advance to the Quarter Final stage of the AFCON as they succumbed to a one nil defeat to their Northern African rivals.
