Long Beach, CA (AP) — Several beaches in Southern California have reopened after a major sewage spill blocked most of the coastline before New Year’s Day.

Health officials in Los Angeles County said on Monday that beaches such as Point Farmin and Outer Cabrillo were unclosed.

Other segments of the coastline remained closed. Officials said Thursday that a sewer main line broke down in Carson City, draining about 8.5 million gallons of sewage into the waterways that flow into the Port of Los Angeles.

The spill closed the swimming area from Sunset Beach in Orange County to Rancho Palos Verdes in Los Angeles County.
