Winston Salem, North Carolina (AP) —Voice recordings show that an off-duty deputy sheriff in North Carolina had a desperate conversation with a 911 operator after shooting a black man last weekend.

The lieutenant heard that a pedestrian jumped into his car and broke the windshield.

Deputy Jeffrey Hash, Deputy Sheriff of Cumberland County, can be heard even more excited while telling the operator that “a lot of cars and people are gathering.”

Fayetteville police said on Monday that a preliminary investigation determined that Jason Walker had encountered traffic on Saturday and jumped into a moving car.

Fayetteville Observer An unarmed Walker was reportedly shot by Hash and sentenced to death on the scene.

Protesters demonstrating since Sunday have challenged police explanations of what happened.

According to the newspaper, protesters are calling for Hash to be arrested.

Hash, who has been with the station since 2005, was reportedly forced to take leave.
