Mark Wright pulls out of London Marathon after sustaining painful injury

Mark Wright has shared his upset at having to pull out of running tomorrow’s London Marathon.

The former Only Way Is Essex star, 34, announced that he is no longer able to take part via a video posted to his Instagram Stories on Saturday.

He explained that he tore a muscle in his calf and after professional advice, he has been told that it is not possible for him to compete.

In the clip, Mark is told by a physio that he would advise he does not run on the injury, adding he could make it “much, much worse”.

Mark said he is “absolutely gutted by the news that I’m not going to be able to compete”.

He added: “I went to the Running Show to pick up my race number the other day which made me even more excited for it, but after a scan the physio confirmed I have a grade two tear and there’s a big risk that if I ran on Sunday I could make it worse.

“It’s hard to take, but of course I’m going to be down there on the day, cheering along all the runners.

“One thing I know is that this experience has made me want to run the marathon even more, I’m already looking towards next year to see if there’s a chance I can get involved.”

On Friday, Mark appeared on ITV’s Lorraine and shared that he was warned about his injury – but at that point he still thought he’d be able to run tomorrow.

He says he is “gutted”

Telling how he planned to push through the injury, the reality TV personality added: “It is annoying it’s upsetting really cos I trained so hard. I don’t know, I’ve just got to sit and think about it, that’s why I’m a little startled this morning.

“He’s advised me not to run but …”

Suggesting that it was playing on his mind, he added: “If I wasn’t doing it Sunday I would do the next one, which comes around in April, because I’ve trained now.

Mark teamed up with Flora for its Get Towns Active campaign and wanted to run the London marathon to inspire others to exercise.
