Colfax, California (AP) — A Christmas weekend storm caused a whiteout and closed major highways as snow blew in the mountains of Northern California and Nevada.

Authorities near Reno reported a stack of 20 cars on the snow-blown highway where drivers described the whiteout condition. The 70-mile interstate highway 80 from Colfax, California to the Nevada line through the Lake Tahoe region was closed on Sunday.

The California State Transportation Agency has also closed other mountain routes, warning of poor visibility and slippery conditions for drivers.
