During an attack on the US Capitol on January 6, Congressman Norma Torres hid and crawls on the balcony floor of the House. At one point, a policeman helped her wear a gas mask.

Torres was supposed to travel to Washington DC and mark it 1st anniversary Of the riot, but she says she couldn’t do it.

“I checked in on the plane yesterday and, to be honest, I realized I couldn’t go there tomorrow. (Too many?) Too many,” said Torres, who represents part of Los Angeles. San Bernardino County.

The trauma that survived that day continues to plague Torres.

The Justice Department has arrested and prosecuted more than 725 defendants nationwide for their role in the January 6 attack, but Torres says that is not enough. Some members of Congress, former White House staff, and President Trump have not stopped questioning the outcome of the 2020 elections.

“Even today, it’s really hard to believe that American citizens may find it very difficult to believe that their elections and votes have been stolen, even though they know their actions and words are wrong. We continue to blow the whistle of hatred because it benefits their campaign. To be honest, no campaign is as important as our democracy, “said Torres.

Jimmy Gomez, a member of the House of Representatives who represents most of Los Angeles County, including Koreatown and downtown Los Angeles, also hid himself from the riots at the Capitol a year ago.

“We always believed that we would lose personal freedom first and then government. We didn’t expect the opposite of you losing government and then personal freedom. On January 6th, we were close to losing the government. “

Gomez says he is suffering from PTSD for January 6th and continues to be caused by the attack.

One thing that helped Gomez and Torres was the formation of a support group, which they call a gallery group. This was a member of parliament hiding on the balcony during the riots and is now tied forever.

“They just get it and we can always lean on each other without judgment,” Gomez said.

“Through text messages, we attend group therapy sessions and are just there for each other when some of us hug, say good words, or just need to escape,” Torres said.

Senator Gomez hasn’t returned to the balcony since the attack and was scheduled to go on Thursday to an anniversary to help him heal, but has been quarantined at home after a positive COVID-19 test.
